Curriculum Overview

Welcome to the Autumn term. Please read below for an overview of our learning for year 4 below.

In English we use quality reading texts as a learning framework.  Through these quality texts we will use key VIPERS skills to develop  our reading (vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanations, retrieval and summarising).  We use our texts as an inspiration for our writing opportunities. This year we will be writing; dairies, instructions, stories, letters, reports, play scripts, explanations and a selection of poems such as - limericks, concrete, nonsense and narrative.

Some of the books we will be enjoying this year are; The Matchbox Diary, Dare To Care, Cinderella On The Nile, Young Gifted And Black, The Paper Bag Prince, Great Women Who Changed The World, Escape From Pompeii, Selection Of Beatrix Potter stories, A Mid Summer Night's Dream, The Wonder Garden, Anthology of Intriguing Animals, Iron Man and What The Romans Did For Us.

We will read a wide and varied selection of poetry; for example - Loopy Limericks, The Jumblies, Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes and many more.

Our Maths curriculum follows The White Rose learning where the children have opportunities to reflect on previous learning, practice new learning and apply their skills to problem solving opportunities. This yer our maths focus will be on - place value, addition ad subtraction, multiplication, division, area, length and perimeter, fraction and decimals, money, time, shape, stats, position and direction.

Multiplications Tables Check

In Year 4 the children will take an online Government multiplication tables check in June. This consists of 25 random multiplication questions with a six second window to answer the question.  To help prepare the children for this we be continually learning all our times tables up to 12 x 12 and will be encouraging the children to continue their times tables learning at home too.

Spellings

We will have a weekly spelling focus with a weekly spelling test on the Monday. Remember to encourage your children to learn their spellings at home.

  • Our Geography focus will begin with the enquiry 'Are all settlements the same?' During this learning we will compare our local area with other, far away, locales and will undertake fieldwork to explore land use in Wolverley.
  • PHSE focus for the autumn term begins with 'Being me in my world' -  a unit which encourages reflection on our role in our class, school and community.
  • Our first Spanish topic is 'Presenting myself' and teaches skills which allow us to ask and reply to simple questions such as our name, how we are feeling and our age or where we live.
  • Art: Drawing power prints. Studying the use of tone and shade, pupils will work to turn drawings and plans into 3D compositions.
  • Science: Group and classify living things with a focus on states of matter, food chains, the digestive system and states of matter.
  • Computing: A photo editing unit.
  • Music: A musical unit based on Mamma Mia
