Curriculum Overview

Summer Term 1 Topic

Our topic for the first part of the Summer Term will be “Hot and Cold Places”. The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English – This term we will be using the short film Zahra and using noun phrases and writing a setting character description based on the story. We will also be using the text Storm Whale in Winter and writing an information text about whales. We will also be learning CEW and having a grammar focus on adding suffixes to words and using conjunctions in their writing.  

 

Phonics - we will be using our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children. We will be continuing to introduce the alternative spellings from level 5 and learning the rules for when different alternative spellings are used. We will also be embedding phonics already taught and getting ready for the phonics screening check in June.

 

Maths -  This half term in Maths we will be introducing multiplication and division. We will also begin a fractions topic particularly focused on halves. Finally we will learn about position and directions. 

 

Science – Our topic in science in 'Plants'. during the topic the children will be learning the parts of plants and trees and how to identify different trees and garden and wild flowers. At forest school we will be carrying out two investigation, the first will be looking at the structure of plants and the second will be looking at reflective materials. 

 

Art - The topic in Art is painting and mixed media. We will be exploring the artist Clarice Cliff and try to recreate some of their Art using the painting skills we will have learnt.

 

Geography  – Our focus in geography will be looking at hot and cold places, including where they are in the globe, and how humans and animals adapt to live in different environments. 

 

Computing - In computing we will be doing programming using the online programming tool 'Scratch Junior'. We will be creating and joining commands and designing and creating our own projects.

 

PE - Our PE focus will be travelling and jumping linked to basic PE skills and then progressing to basic bat and ball skills including using tennis rackets, cricket bats and playing small sided games.

 

Music - This half term we will look at the song 'your imagination'. The children will have the chance to appraise the music, sing along and have a go at playing parts on the glockenspiels. 

 

RE- In RE we will be learning about Sikhism and why God is important to Sikhs. We will think about important people in our lives and important figures in the Sikh religion

 

PSHE - This half term the focus is relationships. This will include speaking and learning about different families, speaking about friendships and celebrating the special people in the children's lives. 

Spring Term 2 Topic

Our topic for the second part of the Spring Term will be “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English – reading "The Barnabus Project" by The Fan Brothers and producing a non-chronological report about their own 'failed project' creature. The children will also create their own adventure story based on 'The Barnabus Project'. We will also be learning CEW and having a grammar focus on using noun phrases and conjunctions in their writing.  

 

Phonics - we will be using our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children. We will be continuing to introduce the alternative spellings from level 5 and learning the rules for when different alternative spellings are used. We will also be embedding phonics already taught and getting ready for the phonics screening check in June.

 

Maths - During this second half of the term, we are focusing our learning on number place value within 50 and measurement. In particular, we are going to be measuring length and height.

 

Science – Our science focus will be looking at the human body, including the five senses and the parts of the human body

 

DT- We will be constructing a windmill. We will design the structure, assemble it and test and evaluate it.

 

Geography  – We will be focusing on learning all about rubbish including knowing what happens to our rubbish, what recycling means, why plastic is environmentally unfriendly and how we can be more environmentally friendly. 

 

Computing - Learning about using a word processing package and typing and altering text in Google Docs.

 

PE - We will start the half term with gymnastics and looking travelling, rolling, jumping and balancing. We will then go on to an attacking and defending games unit where children will learn basic skills needed for a playing invasion games. 

 

Music - 

This is a six-week Unit of Work that builds on previous learning.  All the learning is focused around one song: Round And Round, a Bossa Nova Latin style.

The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc), singing and playing instruments are all linked.

We will also learn and perform our Easter Service song. 

 

RE- 

Christianity

Why was Jesus welcomed like a king or celebrity by the crowds on Palm Sunday?

We will be using the Easter Story to help with our understanding of this special time of year and why it's important to Christians. 

 

PSHE - Healthy Me

This half term we are learning about how to stay healthy and what being healthy means. 

 

Spring Term 1 Topic

Our topic for the first part of the Spring Term will be “Heroes in History”. The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English – reading "Traction Man is Here" by Mini Grey and producing a story map of the story and then using their story map to re-tell the story in their own words. We will also be learning CEW and having a grammar focus on adding suffixes, prefixes and making plural using -3 and -es. We will also be looking at the importance of capital letters for proper nouns 

 

Phonics - we will be using our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children. We will be continuing to introduce the alternative spellings from level 5 and learning the rules for when different alternative spellings are used. We will also be embedding phonics already taught and getting ready for the phonics screening check in June.

 

Maths - During this half term we will be refocusing on number. This will include place value within 20 and addition and subtraction within 20. 

 

Science – Our science focus will be looking at animals, including classifying animals as fish/birds/reptiles/mammals and looking at animal diets, and whether animals are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores.

 

Art- Our art studies will be focused on sculpture and 3d art. The unit focuses on teaching pupils how to transform 2D card shapes into three-dimensional structures and sculptures. Pupils explore abstract shapes and space, develop skills in constructing 3D objects, and understand the difference between 2D and 3D art.

 

History – We will be focusing on the history of 'Famous UK and Kidderminster people'. We will be looking at what can make people famous and learning about some famous UK people including Julia Donaldson and Queen Elizabeth II as well as Rowland Hill from Kidderminster. I am also arranging a visit to the carpet factory to learn about famous carpet makers from Kidderminster. 

 

Computing - Learning about programming using the BeeBots to learn about sequences of instruction and algorithms.

 

PE - We will start the half term doing circuit training and looking at the importance of exercise and we will then go on to a dance unit inspired by the seasons. 

 

Music - 'In The Groove' is a song that was specially written for classroom use to teach children about different styles of music. This is a very easy song to learn and has been arranged in six different styles; Blues, Baroque, Latin, Bhangra, Folk and Funk. Each week we will listen and learn a different style of In The Groove.

 

RE- Who is God to Muslims? In this unit, we will look at what Muslims think about Allah and why he is so special to them.

 

PSHE - The children will fit together the six pieces of learning about their dreams and goals to create Our Garden of Dreams and Goals (Stretchy flowers and dream wellies)

Autumn Term 2 Topic

Our topic for the second part of the Autumn Term will be “When I was Young”. The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English – reading "Grandad's" retold by Benji Davis and writing a description of the jungle using adjectives and also a letter. They will then study the short video "Snack Attack" and write expanded noun phrases and also learn to re-tell a story from the perspective of a character as well as carry out roleplay. 

 

Phonics - we will be using our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children. We will be focusing on introducing the alternative spellings from level 4 and learning the rules for when different alternative spellings are used. 

 

Maths - This half term we will be focussing on addition and subtraction within 10 and ending the half term with some 3d shape work. A perfect time to make and build cube parcels for Christmas! 

 

Science – Seasonal Changes - Autumn and Winter focus. The children will be observing changes that happen during Autumn and Winter including changes in weather, temperature and how trees change. They will also be looking at how animals adapt to survive in the winter

 

ART/DT – During our DT lessons, we will explore some needle work. We will learn about different fabrics and how to join them to make puppets.

 

History – We will be focusing on the history of 'Grandparents' during this topic including learning about how toys, games and school was different when the children's grandparents were young. 

 

Computing - Learning about technology and the parts of a computer and then using the mouse and keyboard to input information to a computer. 

 

PE - We will start the half term doing danced based on the night sky and will then be doing a gymnastic unit based on animals. 

 

Music - Our music lessons will be filled with learning Christmas songs for our Christmas performance. 

 

RE/PSHE - We will continue on our Christianity strand, focussing on the Christmas story, especially why we give gifts at this time of year. PSHE is all about celebrating difference. 

Autumn Term 1 Topic:

 

Our topic for the first part of the Autumn Term will be “Home Sweet Home”. The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English – reading "The Three Little Pigs" retold by Susanna Davidson and writing sentences, speech bubbles, sequencing the story and writing a letter. They will then read "Mrs Mole I'm Home" by Jarvis and write sentences about the Mole's appearance, predict what might happen an carry out roleplay. 

 

Phonics - we will be using our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children. We will be focusing on recapping level 1-3 from Hedgehogs and then introducing the alternative spellings from level 4. 

 

Maths - This half term we will be ............................................

 

Science – Materials. This children will be naming different objects and the materials they are made from and then looking at the properties of different materials.

 

ART/DT – we will be .............................................

 

Geography – We will be focusing on local Geography including learning about Wolverley and Kidderminster and also the countries and capital cities of The British Isles and the seas that surround us. 

 

Computing - Using J2E paint and experimenting with the tools within the software, and what they do. 

 

PE - We will start the half term learning basic throwing and catching skills and then using these in invasion games.
