Autumn Term Topic:

Image result for all aboard

The focus of our All Aboard topic will be looking at vehicles and transport. It will include reading transport themed books and carrying out writing inspired by the texts. In history we will be looking at the development of transport throughout history, using timelines and making comparisons between old and new forms of transport. The topic will also have a science theme where we will be reading ‘The Runaway Train’ and then carry out investigations to compare how things move on different surfaces. As part of the topic we will organising a visit to Enginuity, where children will experience a buggy making workshop. They will also design and make their own buggies in school.

Our whole class reading text will be 'Grandpa's Great Escape' by David Walliams

Key Information

We will be doing PE on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with Mr McDonnell - please ensure PE kits are in school on these days. Also - long hair needs to be tied up on PE days.

Homework will be given out on a Thursday. Children will then have the opportunity on a Friday to check with me if there are any issues or misunderstandings. Monday lunchtimes will be available for pupils to complete homework if needed, and the homework will be collected in on a Tuesday. In Squirrels we will alternate between Maths and English each week, as well as spellings and reading.
On the top of the homework sheet their is also a piece of Education City homework that we ask the children to complete. All children who do this will receive 2 stickers on their charts!

TT Rockstars homework is set each week, and top performing children will receive certificates during our 'Celebrations' on a Friday afternoon.

Forest School

Squirrels will be doing forest school on a Wednesday afternoon. They will need to come to school in their forest school clothes. Could you please provide wellies that will stay in school for use on forest school days?

We will be having a BIG pushing on reading this year in Squirrels, in preparation for the SATs in May. Reading regularly at home is vital to ensure children progress in their reading. Nothing beats some ‘one to one’ time with someone they love listening to them read and placing importance in their reading. With this in mind, we ask that you read every night; even if it’s just a couple of pages, with your child and record it in their reading record book. If the children have not had the opportunity to read at home, they will be given the opportunity to read during morning break.

We will change reading books on a Monday and Thursday. If you have read your book to the end, reading it again can improve fluency and understanding of the text. Free readers will be able to change their books when they finish them, with guidance from either Mrs Harrison or Mrs Hemming.

Spellings will be set on a Friday to be tested the following Friday. Please support your child by practising their spellings with them.
