Curriculum Overview

Summer term curriculum overview

 

We are starting this half term with a historical enquiry ‘What influenced the changes in Britain during the Victorian times?’ During these sessions we will explore how being part of the Empire impacted people’s lives. Below is a list of our main focus areas in some of our other curriculum subjects:

 

  • PSHE focus on relationships including mental health
  • Answering the question, ‘Why is the Torah so important to Jewish people?’
  • Spanish language for the topic of ‘Earth and planets’
  • PE focus will be a mix of cricket and tennis
  • Music unit on Identity: Inspirational women in music following the Charanga scheme
  • Computing will deliver an introduction to spreadsheets
  • Science sessions will focus on Earth and Space

 

Class text and English focus

We will continue to use the text Journey to the River Sea for our shared class read. A pdf copy of the text is available on the Google Classroom, but some children may prefer to have their own copies of the text.

 

The text is a gripping adventure story set in 1910, which follows a young girl’s journey moving to be with her relatives who live up the Amazon.

 

SATs week (9th -12th May)

SATs revision packs have been sent home with pupils to work through and any areas needing further support can be targeted by bringing packs in to SATs booster sessions.

Spring term curriculum overview

We are starting with a history enquiry, How did the Industrial Revolution impact today’s society?, this half term. Below is a list of our main focus areas in some of our curriculum subjects:

 

  • PSHE focus on dreams and goals
  • Answering the question, ‘What does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today?’
  • Spanish language for the topic of ‘Transport in my Town’
  • PE focus will be a mix of dodgeball and invasion games
  • Music unit on A New Year Carol, following the Charanga scheme
  • Computing to learn about computing systems and networks
  • Science sessions will focus on Animals including humans – looking at circulation, healthy lifestyles and the digestive system

 

Class text and English focus

We will be using the text Street Child by Berlie Doherty for our shared class read. A pdf copy of the text is available on the Google Classroom, but some children may prefer to have their own copies of the text.

The text is an gripping adventure story based on the real story of a runaway orphan whose plight inspired Doctor Barnardo to set up his famous children’s refuge.

An overview of the second half of the Autumn half term

 

This half term we are going to be studying World War 1 as our topic and theme.

 

Carrying this into our English, we will be reading Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo - a truly amazing book! We have digital copies on the Google Classroom and a plethora of other Morpurgo texts in school for pupils to enjoy.

 

Below is a list of some of our main focus areas for this half term:

  • Art will centre around the theme of conflict and Paul Nash
  • A DT project will see us design and make Christmas stockings
  • Electricity is our science topic
  • After wrapping up division, we will shift our focus to fractions, decimals and percentages with our maths
  • Celebrating difference for PSHE
  • Computing sessions on vector drawing
  • Answering the question 'What does it mean for Christians to believe that God is holy and loving?'
  • Spanish focus on 'my family and me'

An overview of the first half of the Autumn term

 

Welcome to year 6!

I hope you had a wonderful summer break and are ready and raring to make the most of year 6. We have lots to look forward to and hopefully this will help to share the key information for our class ahead of the autumn term.

We are looking with a geography focus Comparing cities with villages/towns this half term. Below is a list of our main focus in some of our curriculum areas:

  • Studying the work of Ben Kwok and portraits
  • PSHE focus on being me in my world (considering targets and citizenship)
  • Answering the question, ‘What does it mean to be a humanist and a Christian?’
  • PE focus, lead by Mrs Churchard, will be a mix of cross country and dance
  • Music unit on being happy following the Charanga scheme
  • Computing to learn about web page creation
  • Science sessions will focus on Forces including gravity, resistance, friction and mechanisms to improve: levers and pulleys.

 

Class text and English focus

We will be using the text Wonder by R.J. Palacio for our shared class read. A pdf copy of the text is available on the Google Classroom, but some children may prefer to have their own copies of the text – whilst there is a film version available, please encourage children not to watch this just yet as we will build up to it.
