Curriculum Overview

Summer Term 1 Topic

Our topic for the first part of the Summer Term will be “Titanic”. The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English – reading Samson's Titanic Journey and re-telling the main events of the story. The children will also be writing diary entries based on the Titanic Day we have planned. They will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in life aboard Titanic, and then write a diary entry based on their experiences. 

 

Phonicswe will continue to use our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children on a daily basis. We will be focusing on the level 5 alternative spellings for some of the sounds. 

 

Maths - This half term we will be learning about Place Value to 50 and then will be doing some measurement work on length, height, mass and volume.

 

Science – Materials. This children will be looking at the properties of different materials and carrying out experiments to investigate properties of objects

 

DT – we will be designing and making a soup for the third class supper children will be eating during the Titanic day.  The children will be taste testing various vegetables and choosing their favourites to use in our soup 

 

History – Looking at the timeline of Titanic's ill-fated journey, comparing what life on board Titanic was like for first and third class passengers and learning about why the Titanic sank and how a disaster like that was prevented from happening again. 

 

Computing - programming algorithms using Scratch Junior. 

Spring Term 1 Topics

 

All Aboard - Planes, Trains and Automobiles

 

Our topic for the first part of the Spring Term will be “All Aboard”. The focus of the topic will be looking at "Planes, trains and automobiles". The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English – reading transport themed books and carrying out writing inspired by the texts. This will focus on the key text 'Grandad's Island' by Benji Davis. During our study of these key text we will making predictions on what might happen and discussing the book, look at the use of vocabulary within the book and its meaning and writing a letter from Grandad to the boy.  There will also be instructional writing, following on from DT out project where we will be designing and building a moving vehicle.

 

 

Phonicswe will continue to use our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children on a daily basis. We will be focusing on the level 5 alternative spellings for some of the sounds. 

 

Maths - the focus will be Shape, and Place Value to 20. Children will learn the numbers to 20, find 1 more and 1 less than numbers to 20, use a 0-20 number-line and compare and order numbers to 20. Our KIRF for this half term is to know number bonds to 10 and odd and even numbers to 20. 

 

Science – Plants. The children will be learning about plants during their science lessons, focusing on the difference between bulbs and seeds and making observations, as well as identifying the parts of a plant and identifying some common wild and garden plants, as well as common trees.

 

DT – a project where children design and make their own moving vehicles after reading the book ‘All Kinds of Cars’.

 

History – Looking at the development of flight, and specifically the Wright Brothers first manned aircraft, and how their invention shaped air travel. The children will be using timelines and making comparisons between old and new forms of transport. 

 

Computing - understanding how technology words at a simple level, developing keyboard and mouse skills and knowing how to use computers safely. 

Autumn Term 2 Topics

 

One Small Step for Man...

The second part of the Autumn Term will be learning about space explorers – the focus being on astronauts.

 

English – our key text will be ‘Beegu’ by Alex Deacon. We will be creating and describing characters, learning about using adjectives to improve our writing and writing speech bubbles and letters.

 

Phonicswe will continue to use our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children on a daily basis. We will be focusing on the level 4 alternative spellings for some of the sounds.

 

Maths - the focus will be addition and subtraction for this half term, looking at number bonds, part-whole models, fact-families and concrete methods of addition and subtraction. Our KIRF for this half term is adding 0, 1 and 2 to a number.

 

Science – This will be a focus looking at the seasons, focusing on Autumn and Winter. The children will look at the changes that happen during these seasons, including the clothing we wear, what the weather and climate is like and how day length changes. 

 

Art – We will be focusing on the artist Van Gogh, specifically looking at his 'Starry Night' painting. 

 

Music - learning the songs for our Christmas Nativity 'Hey Ewe'.

 

History – looking at the history of space exploration with a focus on Neil Armstrong and Katherine Johnson.

 

Computing - Programming the 'Beebots' and learning about algorithms.

 

 

Autumn Term 1 Topics

 

Happy to be Me!

 

The focus of the topic will be looking at what makes us all special and  unique. We will also have a Geography focus looking at our school and the local area. Our key English text will be 'Elmer' by David McKee. The topic will cover many areas of The National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English – our English text during the topic will be ‘Elmer' by David McKee. By the end of the unit the children will have practiced writing sentences and learning what makes a good sentence. They will write an 'All About Me' book containing facts about themselves, as well as planning and writing their own story about an animal who looks different. 

 

Phonics - we will continue to use our Floppy Phonics scheme to teach phonics to the children on a daily basis. We will initially be recapping the sounds learnt in Hedgehogs, before going on to introduce alternative spellings for some of the sounds.

 

Maths - the main focus for the first half term in maths will be consolidating the children's place value and number knowledge of numbers within 10. This will include counting on and back, subitising, knowing 1 more and 1 less, comparing and ordering numbers and objects and being able to use a numberline. 

 

Geography - Miss Childs will be teaching Geography to the children. The geography focus will be learning about our school and the local area. We will be looking at maps of the school and using them to create our own maps, carrying out some field work around our school, discussing how the children travel to school and finally doing some work on the four compass directions. 

 

Art – in this unit children will learn about portraits. They will be looking at the artistic style of different portrait artists, and using these styles to create their own portraits and self portraits. They will use a range of different media to do this including watercolour, line drawings, collage and pastels.

 

Music – Mrs Cartwright will be teaching music to the children. They will be looking at music in the hip-hop/ rap style and will be learning a song called 'Hey You'.

 

Computing – we will be learning about using the 'j2e Paint' and 'Paintz app' on the computer to create digital paintings. The children will learn about the different tools in the paint packages including the paint tool, fill tool and stamp tool as well as how to change the colour and thickness of the lines.

 

Science – Miss Childs will be teaching science to the children this half term. The focus for science will be looking at everyday materials. The children will learn about naming different materials, as well as the difference between the object and the materials it is made from. They will learn about and test the properties of different materials and will carry out an investigation looking at waterproofness. 

 

PE - Mrs. Churchard will take the children for PE on a Tuesday and Mrs. Harrison will lead PE on Monday. The focus in the first half term is multi-skills.
