Curriculum Overview

Summer Term 1 Topic:

Our topic for the first part of the Spring Term will be “Watch out for the iceberg!”. The focus of the topic will be looking at "The Titanic". The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include: 

 

English: We will be reading Samson's Titanic Journey and re-telling the main events of the story. The children will also be writing diary entries based on our Titanic Day. They will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in life aboard Titanic, and then write a diary entry based on their experiences. 

 

Spelling Focus: We will be looking at suffixes, contraction words and common Year 2 exception words 

 

Maths:  We will be focusing on fractions and time 

 

Science: We will be focusing on living things and their habitats. The children will be looking at local habitats, microhabitats, world habitats and food chains 

 

History: We will be looking at the timeline of Titanic's ill-fated journey, comparing what life on board was like for first and third class passengers and learning about why the Titanic sank and how a disaster like that was prevented from happening again. 

 

DT: We will be designing and making a third class vegetable soup for our Titanic Day. The children will be taste testing various vegetables and choosing their favourites to use in our soup 

 

Computing: Mrs Harrison will be looking at programming

 

PE: Mrs Harrison and Mr Bishop will be focusing on cricket and football 

 

Music: Through Charanga, Mrs Cartwright will be learning 'The Friendship Song'  

 

PSHE: Through our Jigsaw scheme, Mrs Cartwright will be looking at the topic 'Relationships' 

Spring Term 1 Topic:

Our topic for the first part of the Spring Term will be “All Aboard”. The focus of the topic will be looking at "Planes, trains and automobiles". The topic will cover many areas of National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include: 

 

English: We will be starting the topic off by exploring the book 'Journey' by Aaron Becker. We will be exploring setting descriptions and writing a narrative sequel

 

Spelling Focus: We will be focusing adding 'ing', 'ed', 'er' and 'est' to the end of words, /or/ spelt 'a' before l or ll and some Year 2 common exception words

 

Maths: We will be focusing on money, as well as multiplication and division 

 

Science: Plants will be our focus this half term. We will be looking at the life cycle of a plant, what's inside a seed, what plants need to grow and to stay healthy and the famous scientist Jane Colden

 

History: We will be looking at the development of flight, specifically the Wright Brothers first manned aircraft, and how their invention shaped air travel. We will be using timelines and making comparisons between old and new forms of transport.

 

DT: We will designing and making our own moving vehicle after reading the book ‘All Kinds of Cars’.

 

Computing: Mrs Harrison will be looking at computing systems and networks, focusing on the IT all around us 

 

PE: Mrs Harrison, Mrs Churchard and Mr Bishop will be focusing on gymnastics and invasion games

 

Music: Through Charanga, Mrs Cartwright will be learning the song 'I wanna play in a band'. 

 

PSHE: Through our Jigsaw scheme, Mrs Cartwright will be looking at the topic 'Dreams and Goals'.

Autumn Term 2 Topic: 

Our topic for this term is called 'One Small Step for Man' This topic focuses on learning about 2 significant space explorers.

 

English: We will be starting the topic off by exploring the book 'Beegu' by Alexis Deacon. We will be carrying out some role play, story mapping and letter writing. 

 

Spelling Focus: We will be focusing on the /l/ sound spelt 'le', 'el', 'il' and 'al'. As well as the /igh/ sound spelt with 'y' at the end of words and some more Year 2 common exception words.

 

Maths: We will be focusing on addition, subtraction and shapes.

 

Science: We will be recapping on the 4 seasons. We will look at the changes that happen during these seasons, including the clothing we wear, what the weather and climate is like and how day length changes.

 

History: We will be looking at the history of space exploration with a focus on Neil Armstrong and Katherine Johnson.

 

Art: We will be focusing on the artist Van Gogh, specifically looking at his 'Starry Night' painting. 

 

Computing: Mrs Harrison will be programming 'Beebots' and learning about algorithms.

 

PE: Mrs Harrison, Mrs Churchard and Mr Bishop will be focusing on dance and field games.

 

Music: We will be learning the songs for our Christmas Nativity 'Hey Ewe'.

 

PSHE: Through our Jigsaw scheme, Mrs Cartwright will be looking at the topic 'Celebrating Difference'.

Autumn Term 1 Topic: 

Our topic for this term is called 'Happy to be Me!' The focus of this topic will be looking at what makes us all special and unique. We will also have a Geography focus looking at our school and the local area. Our key English text will be 'The Colour Monster' by Anna Llenas. The topic will cover many areas of The National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. This will include:

 

English: We will be starting the topic of by exploring the book 'The Colour Monster' by Anna Llenas. We will be learning how to use adjectives, verbs, similies and conjunctions in our writing to create a poem and a narrative. 

 

Spelling Focus: Through assessment, we will initally recap the sounds learnt in Robins. We will then begin to learn the rules for 'kn' and 'gn', soft 'c' and soft 'j' and some common exception words. 

 

Maths: We will be focusing on place value to 100 as well as some addition and subtraction.

 

Science: Our focus will be studying everyday materials. We will be identifying the uses of everyday materials, comparing the suitability of everyday materials, how the shape of an object made from materials can be changed, the process of recycling and learning about the famous scientist John McAdam. 

 

Geography: We will be learning about our school and the local area. We will be looking at maps of the school and using them to create our own maps, carrying out some field work around our school, discussing how we travel to school and finally doing some work on the four compass directions. 

 

Art: We will be learing all about portraits. We will be looking at the artistic style of different portrait artists, and using these styles to create our own portraits and self portraits. We will use a range of different media to do this including watercolour, line drawings, collage and pastels.

 

Computing: Mrs Harrison will be creating media through digital photography.

 

PE: Mrs Harrison, Mrs Churchard and Mr Bishop will be focusing on invasion games and gymnastics. 

 

Music: Through our Charanga scheme, Mrs Cartwright will be exploring the song 'Hands, feet and Heart' by Joanna Mangona, which celebrates South African music. 

 

PSHE: Through our Jigsaw scheme, Mrs Cartwright will be looking at the topic 'Being Me in My World'.
