Curriculum Overview

Summer Term Topic 1:

We have another history focus this term with us looking at  The Victorians  with an enquiry question of What influenced the changes in Britain during the Victorian times?

 

For our class text for the summer term will be continuing Street Child by Berlie Doherty

Another text we plan to look at is Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.

If children would like to purchase and bring their own copies of the texts to school, it may help them engage with the learning, but extracts will always be given to them where required.

 

Below is a list of our main focus in some of our curriculum areas:

  • Music: Dancing in the Street - Motown
  • Computer: Programming
  • Spanish language for ‘The Weather’
  • Science: Animals including humans
  • PSHE: Relationships
  • PE focus on cricket

Spring Term Topic 1:

We are looking with a historical focus at the Industrial Revolution this half term, with an enquiry question of How did the industrial revolution impact today’s society?

 

 

Our class reading text for the spring term will be Street Child by Berlie Doherty.  The book is always well-received and will complement our history focus.

Another text we plan to read extracts from is Outlaw by Michael Morpurgo.

 

We try to make a pdf version of the text available on Google Classroom, but some children may prefer to have their own copies of the text. If children would like to purchase and bring their own copies of the texts to school, it may help them engage with the learning, but extracts will always be given to them where required.

  • Music: Pop ballads - Make you feel my love
  • PSHE: Dreams and goals
  • Spanish language for the topic of ‘Pets’
  • PE focus on hockey

Autumn Term Topic 2:

 

This half term we are looking at the history topic of...   WW1… 

with the enquiry question of 'What caused WW1'.

 

Our class text, linking the WW1 theme to English, will be War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.

Children are welcome to bring in their own copy of the book, but we have found a PDF version that will be available on Google Classroom.  There is also an audiobook version available on YouTube.

 

(There is a film which is rated PG-13 which we will NOT be watching in school but you can use your discretion as to it's appropriateness for your child/family.)

Maths - we finish looking at addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, then begin looking at fractions.

 

Science - the focus will be Earth and Space, looking at the planets, day & night and the movement of the moon.

 

Computing - Creating media - vector drawing, looking at Google drawings, layers and objects. 

 

Spanish - we will revise colours, numbers and greetings, then move onto My Family and Me.

 

Music - Classroom Jazz will see us looking att improvisation and swing.

 

PSHE - Celebrating Difference will see us looking at different cultures, racism and bullying.

 

Art - we will look at the skill of painting with a spotlight artist of Paul Nash.

 

PE - The children will have PE on a Friday afternoon. This half term we look at gymnastics.

 

 

Autumn Term Topic 1:

 

We are really looking forward to making our learning fun and interesting, which will begin with our first topic for the first half term in September...   I Wonder… 

This will have a geography focus and see us exploring/comparing cities and villages/towns. 

Our class text, linking the wonder theme to English, will be Wonder by R. J. Palacio.

Children are welcome to bring in their own copy of the book, but we have found a PDF version that will be available on Google Classroom.  There is also an audiobook version available on YouTube, as well as a film version for you to enjoy.

Maths - we begin the term by looking at place value, increasing to larger numbers. Then we move through each of the operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

 

Science - the focus will be Living Things and their Habitats, looking at life cycles and plants.

 

Computing - Computing Systems and Networks is where we begin with computing, looking at networks and the sharing of information. 

 

Spanish - we will revise colours, numbers and greetings, then move onto My Family and Me.

 

Music - Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer will drive our look into rock anthems.

 

PSHE - Being Me in My World will see us planning the year ahead, including rights and responsibilities, and rewards and consequences.

 

Art - we will look at the skill of drawing, focusing on portraits. The spotlight artist is Ben Kwok.

 

PE - The children will have PE on a Friday afternoon. This term we look at volleyball and the associated skills.
