Squirrels

Welcome to

Squirrels

Spring Term Topic:

The focus of the Sensation Safari topic will be a science focus studying animals from the jungle, including habitat, food chains and identifying living and non-living things. We will also be carrying out a Geography focus, comparing Wolverley to Kenya and carrying out some local area fieldwork. The topic will cover many areas of the National Curriculum and will give the children a cross curricular approach to their learning. As part of the topic I will be organising a visit to All Thing Wild in Honeybourne, where children will see some of the animals from Africa forst hand, and will also have an education session linked to animals and their habitats as well as an animal encounters session.

Our whole class reading text will be 'The Butterfly Lion' by Michael Morpurgo.

Key Information

Timetable

PE

We will be doing PE on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with Mr McDonnell - please ensure PE kits are in school on these days. Also - long hair needs to be tied up on PE days.

Homework

Homework will be given out on a Thursday. Children will then have the opportunity on a Friday to check with me if there are any issues or misunderstandings. Monday lunchtimes will be available for pupils to complete homework if needed, and the homework will be collected in on a Tuesday. In Squirrels we will alternate between Maths and English each week, as well as spellings and reading.
On the top of the homework sheet their is also a piece of Education City homework that we ask the children to complete. All children who do this will receive 2 stickers on their charts!

TT Rockstars homework is set each week, and top performing children will receive certificates during our 'Celebrations' on a Friday afternoon.

Forest School

Squirrels will be doing forest school on a Wednesday afternoon. They will need to come to school in their forest school clothes. Could you please provide wellies that will stay in school for use on forest school days?

Reading

We will be having a BIG pushing on reading this year in Squirrels, in preparation for the SATs in May. Reading regularly at home is vital to ensure children progress in their reading. Nothing beats some ‘one to one’ time with someone they love listening to them read and placing importance in their reading. With this in mind, we ask that you read every night; even if it’s just a couple of pages, with your child and record it in their reading record book. If the children have not had the opportunity to read at home, they will be given the opportunity to read during morning break.

We will change reading books on a Monday and Thursday. If you have read your book to the end, reading it again can improve fluency and understanding of the text. Free readers will be able to change their books when they finish them, with guidance from either Mrs Harrison or Mrs Hemming.

Spellings

Spellings will be set on a Friday to be tested the following Friday. Please support your child by practising their spellings with them.
