Topic - The Mayans
We are studying the Mayans this half term. It will be a great opportunity to research all about this ancient civilisation and their customs. This will cover it's history and provide opportunity to have geographical links looking at locational knowledge with map work, climate zones and settlement.
Children will need suitable kit and footwear to be ready for indoor and outdoor sessions every week due to the changeability of the weather. These should be kept in our lovely new lockers, along with school bags and coats, unless wet.
Homework will be set weekly, on a Thursday, for maths and English. There will also be spellings and times tables set each week on a Wednesday. The children may need support with learning the meanings as well as how to spell them. The aim of times tables practise is to build up speed and fluency, TT Rockstars will support this too. Additionally, there will be topic homework which will usually be in the form of a project and may be set over several weeks rather than a new task weekly.
Reading in Owls
Every child in Owls has been issued with a reading record. We expect children to read and discuss their books with adults weekly (to sign records) and read at home daily.
In years 5 and 6 we encourage children to be independent and choose their own books, but encourage them to read a range of texts.
Our class text is Skellig by David Almond: children are welcome to bring their own copies to follow along in class as we read together.
Links to websites that the children use in school which may be useful for them to access at home.
