History Curriculum Intent

Our History Provision aims pupils to help gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world. We want to inspire pupils' curiosity to know more about the past. It is important that through our curriculum design that we are equipping pupils to ask questions, think critically, weigh evidence and develop perspective and judgement. History helps to understand the complexity of people's lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. It is our intent to make sure that children make progress with the knowledge, skills and vocabulary required to be a good historian as they move through the school. Our aim will be, where possible, to make it relevant and meaningful to them and their lives. Our whole school curriculum vision supports and drives our intent for History at Wolverley Sebright Primary Academy.

Our intent is to teach content in small, manageable steps to reduce cognitive load. At Wolverley Sebright Primary Academy, the History curriculum will ensure that children have the pre-requisite knowledge required in order to access new learning and concepts are revisited to ensure that children build on and retain what they have been taught in previous years. Retrieval practice will be used to support children transferring ideas from their working memory into their long term memory. Children will be given regular opportunities to retrieve through;

  • Quizzes
  • Making links across the curriculum
  • Memory games
  • Sharing and imparting their knowledge to others through presentations/assemblies

More detail about how we will achieve our intent is outlined in our Curriculum Statement for History below:

History Knowledge Skills and Vocabulary Progression Grid:
Our intent is strongly underpinned by the characteristics that we want our children to display as Historians:
